Part Five of the remarkable, world record-setting D. Brent Pogue Collection will be highlighted by the Dexter 1804 Silver Dollar, one of the finest, and most visually appealing examples of this storied rarity. Discovered in Germany in 1884, it became, in 1887, the only example of this American icon to have had its authenticity sworn to by United States Mint Officials, and it is probably regarding this piece that the sobriquet the “King” of American coins was first used.
The sale’s greatest strength is in the simply astonishing group of more than 150 early United States large cents and half cents, many of which are the finest known survivors. Included are four 1794 large cents which have perhaps the longest provenance of any United States coins. They were obtained by Sir William Strickland, an Englishman who knew many of the Founding Fathers (and later became a correspondent of both Washington and Jefferson), during his trip to America in 1794-95, and remained in his family until sold by the 4th Baron St Oswald of Nostell (Major The Lord St. Oswald) in 1964.
The sale will be held at the Carriage House of the Evergreen Museum & Library, part of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Evergreen was home to T. Harrison Garrett and his son John Work Garrett who assembled one of the greatest collections of coins in this country, from which father and son Mack Pogue and D. Brent Pogue obtained some of their most admired highlights.
