Magnificent set of Six volumes plus the idex making it seven hardcovered books of the sale by Christie's of the important collection of early and rare printed books and manuscripts amassed by Estelle Doheny. The volumes are in fine condition, and are a masterpiece of layout and full-color and B&W printing of the superb books which were sold at auction between 1987 and 1989.
Vol. I covers incunabula, including the Gutenberg Bible, which brought $4.9 Million, and contains a census of copies of the Gutenberg Bible. There are a number of folding color illustrations included. The books contain many fine indices and reference material.
Vol. II covers Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts.
Vol III is of Printed Books and Manuscripts including Western Americana.
Vol. IV contains Printed Books and Manuscripts including Early Printing, Literature and Fine Bindings.
Vol. V lists Printed Books and Manuscripts including Americana, Literature and Fine Bindings.
Vol. VI contains Printed Books and Manuscripts concerning William Morris and His Circle. The items listed in these handsome bound volumes, each 12" x 8-1/2" with complete descriptions and profusely illustrated, brought a grand total of $37,842.758.00, for some 2,300 lots.
