Description

Numerous highlights range from an early watercolor, Trees at Cassiobury Park, by J.M.W. Turner; and a portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence, the existence of which was only previously known from an engraving in the British Museum; to a rare still-life, on vellum, by the 18th-century botanical artist J.A. Simson. Works by `Golden Age' artists such as David Cox, Peter de Wint and J.S. Cotman are also offered in the sale. The Victorian section is led by an important rediscovery of an early Rossetti sketch, Cat's cradle, which was one of the works offered in Rossetti's studio sale; and a jewel like watercolor, Fairies and a bird's nest by John Anster Fitzgerald (1832-1906), one of the most important exponents of the genre of fairy painting. The Modern British section boasts a group of watercolors by the renowned artist Augustus Edwin John (1878-1961) including Head of Edie McNeill; and works by L.S. Lowry, William Russell Flint Edward Ardizzone and Edward Seago. This post auction catalog consists of 142 lots all illustrated in color and all described in detail. Catalog is in fine condition.
