Leading the evening sale is a rare canvas of a London scene, Factory in North London, by Lucian Freud, which is one of an important group of urban landscapes that Freud painted between 1970 and 1972, a period of transition in Freud's work and one that, arguably, was instigated by the death of his father, Ernst, in 1970. These intensely observed and dispassionately objective portraits of the cold reality of the London landscape are among the most memorable and powerful of all of Freud's works (lot 9). Another important work offered in the sale is by the celebrated American photographer Richard Prince, Untitled (Cowboy), executed in 1980-84, and belonging to his highly sought after series of photographs of the "Marlboro man". These images of the American cowboy, drawn from a highly visible advertising campaign, question the mythology of the American dream and the exploitation of the virile male (lot 4).
