Sale overview
The auction of one of the world’s greatest libraries of seafaring books and atlases consists of 203 lots, and includes some of the rarest and most important maritime atlases ever published. All the great seafaring nations are represented in the collection, and its geographical reach is truly global, with atlases and sea-charts covering the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia, as well as polar exploration in the Arctic. There are beautiful 17th century atlases from the Dutch Golden Age of Cartography, important and decorative single-sheet maps, as well rare narratives of the great voyages of exploration and discovery. A selection of books will be on view at Christie’s Paris 12-15 April, with viewing of the entire collection starting on Thursday 30 May in Christie’s King Street galleries in London. The auction happens on Wednesday 5 June.
