Sale overview
Orientalist Art in London features a curated range of works form the heart of 19th-century Europe. Highlights of Nordic art include a sensational work by Finnish artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela. A range of exemplary French Barbizon inspired plein-air works from Corot to Rousseau take the first steps on the path towards Impressionism. A selection of Dutch romantic paintings, sitting alongside Spanish depictions of the modern garden by artists such as Santiago Rusiñol, is also featured. There is a strong offering of Orientalist works, ranging from Jean Leon Gerome’s precise and delicate style, to topographically accurate renditions of Istanbul by Malta’s Count Amadeo Preziosi.
