Christie’s March 2015 sale of Fine Chinese Paintings offers a wide range of carefully selected paintings and calligraphy with something for every taste and interest. One of the earliest works is a frigid winter landscape from the Yuan/early Ming period. Paintings from the collection of Reverend Isaac Headland (1859-1942), whose wife was a member of Dowager Empress Cixi’s (1835-1908) medical team, feature works from the couple’s years in Beijing and includes a painting from the Empress’s own hand. An exquisite depiction of a butterfly alighting on a blossoming branch by Yu Fei’an (1888-1959) is the highlight of the refined collection of famed guqin musician and scholar Zha Fuxi (1895-1978). Paintings by modern masters Zhang Daqian (1899-1983), Huang Junbi (1898-1991), and Lu Yanshao (1909-1993) are followed by a selection of works by their artistic heirs, who, with great creativity coupled with deep knowledge, are bringing the Chinese painting tradition into the contemporary period, including Liu Guosong (born 1932), Shen Peng (born 1931), and Wang Mansheng (born 1962).
