SOTHEBYS OF ROYAL AND NOBLE DESCENT 2/24/15

Our Of Royal & Noble Descent auction achieved a final total of £1,970,828. The top lot was The Furnace of Hell from a follower of Hieronymus Bosch, which achieved £115,000, ten times its pre-sale estimate of £10,000-15,000. A highlight of the sale was a gold-mounted micromosaic and granite snuff box, which soared above its estimate of £5,000-7,000 to sell for £43,750. Strong results were also recorded for a collection of 24 portraits of Roman Emperors and their consorts and a turn-of-the-century silver model of the warship Kaiser Friedrich III, which achieved £90,000 and £75,000 respectively.
After the great success of our Of Royal and Noble Descent auction in January 2014, we are pleased to announce the 2015 edition, which will take place in London on Tuesday 24February. This exciting sale will include a variety of objects from different categories: from paintings and furniture to silver and ceramics, to jewellery and objets d’art, all descending from or with a strong connection to royal and aristocratic European collections.

This year’s highlights include an exquisite Chinese hardstone and coral ruyi sceptre, a rare mother-of-pearl table top by Franz de Hamilton as well as an impressive collection of presentation gold boxes. A fantastic German cabinet with more than thirty wax figures by Caspar Bernhard Hardy and a commode by the master cabinet-maker Abraham Roentgen are also among the sale’s noteworthy pieces.
